how they do it

they are
butchers.

issues are
their cleaver.

their cleaver
slams down
and cuts.
blood spills often.

but the chopping
never
stops.

their business
relies
on the cleaver
never, ever
stopping.

first,
they take
one nation.
then they
cut it into
two parties.

(imagine chopping a
side of beef
in half.)

after that
it’s easy.
then it’s only a matter
of getting the beef
on the block and
finding the right place
to cut.

but this is an
old business so
it’s no trouble
anymore.

they take one piece
and divide it
with the words,
‘under god.’

they take one piece
and divide it
with questions of liberty
for those who are
different.

they take one piece
and divide it
with money.

they take one piece
and divide it
with two variants of
a single propaganda
machine.

they take one piece
and divide it with
abortion.

they take one piece
and divide it
over patriotism.

at this point
they’ve a clump of
cutlets in two piles.

that’s when
the customers come in.
they’re so used
to this butcher.

it’s like they’ve
no choice
but to keep
coming back.

some want filets.
some strips.
some sirloins.
some want rump roast.
some want chuck.
some want ground beef.
some want the liver.

but most forget that
it used to be
just one cow.
and that it was once part
of a larger herd.
