don’t tread on me

the snake
lay coiled-flat
like a
rope.
then it heard
danger.
the snake
sprung up
at the danger.
teeth bared.
rattle snapping.
all faster than
an eye-blink.

an agile wonder
of life.

his fangs hit
metal.
his fangs snapped.
snapped on a
tank’s
steel tread.

the machine
rolled over
the outstretched
snake.
sharp treads
cut the snake
to pieces.
immovable weight
smeared the snake
into paste.

the tank went away,
noisy and
unaware.

this brave
roadkill
was left rotting.

disassembled
and dead.
