misplaced

how many hours
have we spent
looking for keys?

(they’re not in
yesterday’s pockets.)

looking for keys,
we’re helpless.

(they’re not on
the dusty bookshelf.)

it’s time to go.
but the clock
just keeps ticking.

(no one else
has seen them.)

we’re stuck.
we shouldn’t be.
but we are.

(checked the bathroom
twice. still nothing.)

that goddam car would go
with its goddam keys.

(there’s only a worthless
quarter under the cushion.)

if only we knew
where to find them.

(perhaps someone will invent
a way
to never let us lose them.)

still,
no keys yet.
and going nowhere.
